What Is TMJ Disorder?

Everyone has two temporomandibular joints (TMJs). These hinges are located just in front of your ears and control movement of your lower jaw. They are complex joints, and when they are damaged or inflamed, they can lead to the symptoms that are commonly associated with TMJ disorder (TMD).

TMD can affect anyone, and it can have a variety of causes. For example, it might be the result of stress, teeth grinding, or other factors.

Symptoms of TMJ Disorder

TMJ disorder can lead to dozens of different symptoms, some of the most common of which are:

  • Pain, discomfort, and tenderness in and around the jaw
  • Limited jaw mobility or the sensation of lockjaw
  • Clicking and popping sounds with jaw movement
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Pain in the neck, back, and shoulders
  • Headaches or migraines
  • Difficulty chewing
  • Changes in bite

Types of TMJ Treatment

There are a number of different ways to relieve TMJ symptoms. For example, you may notice a reduction in symptoms with certain home remedies, like dietary adjustments or improvements to your posture. You may also need professional care. A nightguard is an effective way to prevent teeth grinding and take some stress off your jaw joints. Many patients are also candidates for BOTOX injections.

BOTOX® Injections

While BOTOX is most commonly known for its aesthetic applications, it can also do much to relieve TMJ pain. When it is injected near the jaw joints, it forces the muscles to relax. In turn, this eases tension throughout the face and can lead to powerful pain relief. The results can last for several months at a time.
