What is Sleep Apnea?

When a person has sleep apnea, their breathing is interrupted for short periods several times throughout the night—over 100 episodes an hour for severe cases! This interrupts the sleep cycle and causes a person to partially wake up to resume normal breathing. As a result, they don’t get the deep, restorative sleep they need to feel rested.
This is often caused by the tissues in the mouth and throat blocking the airway when someone lies down (known as obstructive sleep apnea, or OSA). Sleep dentists like Dr. Lindsey are experts when it comes to this part of the body, meaning they can offer treatment that directly addresses the source of the problem to dramatically reduce symptoms.
